Senator Angela R. Bryant
Angela R. Bryant, JD, is an Inclusive Diversity and Organizational Development Consultant with Angela Bryant Consulting which is affiliated with VISIONS, Inc, an organization which she co-founded. She is the former Director, and one of the developers of, The Wright’s Center, Inc., an adult day health care project in Rocky Mount founded by VISIONS Inc. in 1989 for elders, disabled adults, their caregivers and service providers.
Ms. Bryant has more than 30 years of legal experience and was a NC state administrative law judge for ten years. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Juris Doctorate degree in law at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). She has held several appointed governmental positions, including service on the UNC-CH Board of Trustees and the UNC System Board of Governors. She was a Charter Member and former President of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys and the1983 Lawyer of the Year for the North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers, for co-founding the Land Loss Prevention Project at NCCU School of Law.
Senator Bryant is serving her fifth term in the legislature: three terms in the House and two in the Senate. Ms. Bryant is currently a member of the Agriculture/Environment/Natural Resources, Appropriations on Natural and Economic Resources, Appropriations Base Budget, Commerce, Education and Higher Education, Finance, Judiciary II, and Pensions & Retirement and Aging Committees. In December 2015, Ms. Bryant was appointed to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committees on Agriculture and Natural & Economic Resources, Economic Development and Global Engagement, Elections Justice and Public Safety and Medicaid and NC Health Choice (Advisor) and the Joint Subcommittee of the Justice and Public Safety Oversight Committee and the Health and Human Services Oversight Committee. She is also one of the Senate Deputy Democratic Leaders, the First Vice Chair of the NC Legislative Black Caucus and Chair of the NC Delegation of the Roanoke River Bi-State Commission.(appointed by the Governor).
Honors and Awards
In 2006, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UNC-CH, and in 2010, she received the Service to Humanity Award from the Rocky Mount Human Relations Commission. She served on the City Council of Rocky Mount, for three years and was appointed to the House of Representatives on January 23, 2007. In 2010 she received the “Friend of the Counties” Award from the NC Association of County Commissioners and the “Frederick Douglas Leadership Award” from the North Carolina Association of Black County Officials, in 2011, the “Defender of Justice Award” from the NC Justice Center and in 2012, the Southeast Association of Telecommunications Officers & Advisors Legislator of the Year Award for promoting the development of public, educational and government access channels in local communities. In 2013, Bryant received the Champion of NC Working Families Award from NC Families Care for sponsoring the NC Caregiver Relief Act and Healthy Workplaces Act and for overall efforts on behalf of NC working families and, in 2014, Senator of the Year by the League of Conservation Voters.
In her work, Ms. Bryant has been consulting to and training individuals and organizations in applying principles of justice to interpersonal problem solving and organizational development for over 20 years. She particularly focuses on the areas of equality and justice, community economic development, managing transitions, collaborative problem solving, meeting facilitation, overcoming the internalized effects of inequity, train-the-trainer model, youth and adult leadership development and global inclusive excellence issues.
